چکیده

While conventional approaches to causal inference are mainly based on conditional (in)dependences, recent methods also account for the shape of (conditional) distributions. The idea is that the causal hypothesis “X causes Y ” imposes that the marginal distribution PX and the conditional distribution PY |X represent independent mechanisms of nature. Recently it has been postulated that the shortest description of the joint distribution PX,Y should therefore be given by separate descriptions of PX and PY |X . Since description length in the sense of Kolmogorov complexity is uncomputable, practical implementations rely on other notions of independence. Here we define independence via orthogonality in information space. This way, we can explicitly describe the kind of dependence that occur between PY and PX|Y making the causal hypothesis “Y causes X” implausible. Remarkably, this asymmetry between cause and effect becomes particularly simple if X and Y are deterministically related. We present an inference method that works in this case. We also discuss some theoretical results for the non-deterministic case although it is not clear how to employ them for a more general inference method.

Inferring Causal Directions in Errors-in-Variables Models

A method for inferring causal directions based on errors-in-variables models where both the cause variable and the effect variable are observed with measurement errors is concerned in this paper. The inference technique and estimation algorithms are given. Some experiments are included to illustrate our method.

Causal reasoning by evaluating the complexity of conditional densities with kernel methods

We propose a method to quantify the complexity of conditional probability measures by a Hilbert space seminorm of the logarithm of its density. The concept of Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces (RKHS) is a flexible tool to define such a seminorm by choosing an appropriate kernel. We present several examples with artificial datasets where our kernel-based complexity measure is consistent with our...

Analysis of Cause-Effect Inference via Regression Errors

We address the problem of inferring the causal relation between two variables by comparing the least-squares errors of the predictions in both possible causal directions. Under the assumption of an independence between the function relating cause and effect, the conditional noise distribution, and the distribution of the cause, we show that the errors are smaller in causal direction if both var...

Causal Inference on Multivariate Mixed Type Data

Given data over the joint distribution of two univariate or multivariate random variables X and Y of mixed or single type data, we consider the problem of inferring the most likely causal direction between X and Y . We take an information theoretic approach, from which it follows that €rst describing the data over cause and then that of e‚ect given cause is shorter than the reverse direction. F...
